What is counselling?

Counselling is the relationship between a client and a trained professional like psychologist that focuses on the client’s concerns and difficulties. Counselling help the individuals in improving the understanding of themselves, including their thought patterns, behaviours, feelings and the problems they are facing in their lives. Counselling also provides individuals with opportunities to examine how to tap into existing resources or develop new ones that make for more effective living and relationships. Counselling can be said a collaborative effort as it involves the client and psychologist working together to identify goals.

How do I know if I need to see a psychologist?

It may be an appropriate time to consult with a psychologist or counsellor if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
  • Personal issues interfere with sleep, eating habits, concentration, academic performance, and/or relationships with others.
  • Persistent worry
  • Feeling depressed, lethargic, or apathetic.
  • Thoughts of suicide or wanting to harm yourself
  • Increased irritability, inappropriate mood swings, angry outbursts.
  • Engaging in bizarre, threatening or dangerous behavior, violent or other extremely disruptive behavior (e.g.,hostile, threats, assaults)
  • Loss of control of your life.
  • Experiencing uncertainty about your choice of university major or career.
  • Concerned about the behavior or psychological status of someone else (e.g., partner, family member, peer) and wondering about how or even whether you should intervene.

What's the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychologists are concerned with the study and management of human behaviour.

  • Psychologists require, at minimum, a Master’s degree in psychology or Post-graduation
  • For clinical psychologist they requir 2 years full time M.Phil in clinical psychology recognized by RCI.
  • Psychologist are tranined in psychomatric test and therapeutic interverensions for psychiatric and non-psychiatric patients.
  • Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and emotional disorders.
  • Psychiatrists attend medical school and receive Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree.
  • Following the completion of this degree, individuals are then required to complete a post-graduate residency-training program with a specialization in psychiatry.
  • Treatment approaches is more biologically based.
  • Unlike psychologists, psychiatrists are able to prescribe psychotropic

Will counseling be helpful to me?

If you find yourself regularly making statements like the following, you probably will benefit from counseling.

Personally...

  • I don't like where I'm headed in life.
  • I feel depressed, lonely, disconnected..
  • I feel like I never measure up.
  • It's hard to feel hopeful.
  • I have lost interest in the things that use to bring me pleasure.
  • I worry too much.
  • I'm overwhelmed and can't seem to get anything accomplished.
  • I feel so uncomfortable in situations that most people seem to be able to handle.
  • It's taking me too long to adjust to my new circumstances. (Such as: a move, a death, a new job, etc.)
  • No matter what I do I can't seem to control my eating.

In my relationships...

  • I keep struggling in my relationships and I'm not sure what to do.
  • I keep going around in circles trying to manage my family, yet nothing seems to work.
  • I don't think my marriage is going to survive.
  • Everything was all right in our family until he/she became a teenager. Then things seemed to change.

Why not just talk to friends?

Many of the benefits of therapy can also be achieved by talking to friends; however there are also downsides to this, for example:

Friends are often unable to just listen and will often want to give advice - or try to solve your “problems” their own way. It might be difficult for friends not to get upset by what they hear and that can add to your pain or anguish. Friends sometimes find it difficult to keep things confidential, particularly if they are involved or know anyone you talk about. It can also be quite draining on friends, particularly if you need a lot of support or they have their own problems.

Which is better, therapy or medication?

Both medication and therapy have been shown to be effective in treating mental illness. The type of treatment used depends on the nature of the problem. Generally, medication is often prescribed for conditions known to have strong biological components, such as major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or panic disorder.

Research suggests that use of medication and psychotherapy together may be the best approach, especially for more severe conditions. The medication offers relief from symptoms, and psychotherapy enables the individual to gain knowledge about her condition and how to handle it. This combined approach offers the fastest, longest-lasting treatment.

Should I see a male or female therapist?

Individuals often wonder if they would do better with a male or female therapist. Research on therapist traits and therapy outcome has failed to identify any relationship between the two. Factors such as warmth and empathy are much more related to outcome than therapist gender. However, the nature of your particular problem as well as your own preferences may lead you to seek out a male or female therapist. For example, a woman who was sexually abused by her father may feel more comfortable working with a woman therapist.
